Neurofunk emerged in the late 1990s and early 2000s, evolving from techstep and influenced by genres like techno and industrial. Artists such as Ed Rush & Optical, Konflict, and Bad Company are considered pioneers of the genre. It gained popularity through releases on labels like Virus Recordings and Renegade Hardware, shaping a new direction for drum and bass focusing on intricate soundscapes and darker themes.
